I grow around 8 different species of lilium, and they generally grow about 1 inch a day on average until they reach full height. Some of the smaller ones, more like 1/2 inch a day since they only get up to 2-3ft. I think I might get a few 8 footers this year. Here's some of them in my collection.
These are my top performers with 2 stems per plant.
This lily species proliferates like crazy so I might have to sell off some of these bulbs soon.
Notice the difference between the tree lily, and the asiatic lilies.
These are growing in relatively dry soil which limits their growth quite a bit.
This one is competing with the perennial sunflower so it will have to get moved soon
Here are some of the tree lily babies that were taken from the base of the mature lilies. These guys tend to do very well in pots that I fill with a home made potting mix.
This is just gladiolus. They happened to just start coming up a few days ago and have really proliferated well since last year.

The ones that were potted up have been taken, but there are still plenty of them in the ground that I want thinned out a bit so there's still quite a few left.
DeleteAll the lilies that I'm giving away are gone for now. The one thing about these plants to be concerned about is red lily beetles. They tend to feed solely on lilies and it is easy to have an infestation while the liles are still soft and actively growing.
ReplyDeleteMine don't have any infestations, but if you ever see any red beetles on the lilies, they are pretty easy to eradicate by sprinkling any insecticide powder over the plants and around the base of them.
Steve,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the plants - I just finished getting them in the ground in my yard. Can't wait for them all to bloom!
I appreciate your willingness to share your lilies (and the hens and chicks)!
Thanks again -
Heather
No problem.
DeleteThese plants double up every year so there will always be more. I like giving each plant enough space so they don't compete against each other. Blooming should start by around June.
