In ground peonies waking up after a warm week 2014

Finally, most of my peonies have broken out of their shells, so here are the photos. We just had 2 days of temperatures over 80F which will make many plants including peonies break their dormancy.

Japanese tree peonies planted as 1 year old grafts back in 2012, 2 years ago.


Yellow tibetian tree peony, ludlowii planted spring of 2013, coming back to life.

    Steve, I was wondering if you've ever brought seed from ebay? You can get them 20 for 99 cents. Have you had any luck? Do they blossom true to the picture? It's a cheap investment(except for the time) and I was wondering you take on it. I live in the heart of Michigan and I think I'm going to try starting some this year.

      Most of the tree peonies I started from seed are either from eBay or ali-express. I've found that sometimes, there will be no germination on some batches, and other batches have fairly decent germination which means the freshness of the seeds matters. None of them have bloomed yet, but I doubt that they will bloom true to their species for the most part.

    I bought some seeds from ebay in 2012, and planted them in September. About 35% of seeds germinated in the last spring. Another 20% just comes out in this week.

      Wow, it looks like you got a pretty good batch if that many of them are germinating. They are very prone to being eaten by mice before they germinate, or rotting away so you are doing pretty good there.

      It looks like you have a pretty decent amount of them. As far as the 4th year tree peony seedling that was in that picture, here's a more recent picture of it. I don't expect it to flower this season, but it looks pretty close to it.

      I noticed that in the photo above you said these were 4th year peony but they appear to be sprouting from the ground. I thought tree peony sprouted from the old stems?
